Spanish for Kids: Los Animales
is the first in the multiple award-winning “Spanish for Kids” series. This fabulous series, aimed at children aged 1-5, uses immersion techniques, as well as fun songs, animation, puppets and games to teach Spanish to young language learners. A parent (and kid) favorite!
Spanish for Kids: Vamos a Jugar is the second in the Spanish for Kids series. Kids build their vocabulary through skits, songs and plays- another wonderful DVD! For kids aged 1-5 (although could even be for slightly older kids).
Spanish for Kids: Adentro y Afuera
is the third in the award-winning Spanish for Kids series. This DVD is aimed at kids aged 2-7, and uses live action, animation, puppets, music, and fun to teach kids words for everyday objects and activities. A great immersion DVD!
Little Pim: 3-Pak Spanish for kids – Vol. 1 is a fun, award-winning series designed to introduce foreign language to babies, toddlers, and preschoolers. Each 35-minute DVD features seven five minute episodes starring a lovable, animated panda, who is also the teacher. Volume 1 comes with three DVDs- Eating and Drinking, Wake Up Smiling, and Playtime.
El Perro Y El Gato: The Adventure Begins is a wonderful series from HBO. It is a seamlessly bilingual cartoon featuring a dog and cat who go on silly, wacky adventures. Its suitable for preschoolers, but older kids love it too (as do adults!) I highly recommend this one.
The adventures of El Perry y El Gato continue in El Perro Y El Gato: From Here To There. In this dvd, follow El Perro y El Gato as they go from an under the sea encounter with an octopus to a not-quite-ordinary trip to the supermarket. Wherever they go, it’s always fun, and always in English and in Spanish.
Plaza Sesamo: Me Gusta Ser Yo is a fabulous episode of the Spanish language version of Sesame Street. Keep in mind that this DVD is not an instructional video in Spanish, but comes from the Spanish-language version of Sesame Street. So it is a wonderful way to reinforce language learning in a toddler or older child, or to get a child unfamiliar with Spanish interested in the language. There are MANY more Plaza Sesamo episodes to chose from.
Sesame Street – Fiesta! is in both English and Spanish, and introduces short phrases and numbers in Spanish through fun, catchy songs (there is even one by Celia Cruz on there!). There is a lot of English on the DVD, but this video can be a good way to introduce Spanish to a young child- show them that learning a second language is fun!
A great way to expose your kids to Spanish is to let them watch English favorites in Spanish! Several of the Dora the Explorer videos come with a Spanish track (not all of them do, so you must check the specifications on the product description). Dora the Explorer – Animal Adventures is one with a Spanish language track.
Dora the Explorer – Musical School Days is another Dora episode with a Spanish language track. The English and French tracks are also on the DVD.
Your kids don’t like Dora- try Diego! Go Diego Go! – Safari Rescue is an Diego DVD with a Spanish (as well as English and French) language track. Remember, not all Diego DVDs come with language tracks other than English.
